My Favourite Planet
 the online travel guide
my-favourite-planet.com
My Favourite Planet grew from the website you are now looking at. Having spent many hundreds of hours taking and editing massive amounts of travel photos and writing articles to accompany them, I soon realized that all this material would need its own website.
In 2007, Encouraged by friends, particularly Peter Hinze, I began developing the travel guide website. After experimenting with various concepts, layouts and names for the project, I launched the first version of My Favourite Planet at the end of 2008. Within a year I had already published nearly 1000 pages of photos and information about 13 destinations in 4 countries. We have now accumulated material for more than 100 locations in over 15 countries, and are editing and preparing it for publication. Stay tuned ...
Other features of My Favourite Planet include two regular blogs: Edwin Drood's Column by the Mysterious Edwin Drood, and The Cheshire Cat Blog.
The website also contains other graphics and maps, some of which will be featured on davidjohnberlin soon. |

Ursa Major Design, Berlin
 logo and animation designs 1992-2010
Ursa Major is many people's favourite constellation. It is also one of the most easily identifiable constellations in the northern hemisphere and has fascinated humans for as long as there have been humans.
I started including it in my drawings and paintings in the 1980s, and made the first hand-drawn Ursa Major logo in London in the early 1990s. When I started producing computer animations, notably "Friendly Bombs", I used the Ursa Major Productions logo as a trademark.
By 1998 I had already decided I wanted to distinguish the kind of artistic work which appears on this website davidjohnberlin from my more commercial output. The original Ursa Major website suddenly went offline after my then partner "lost" the domain. It had been snapped up by a mercenary company which then attempted to sell it back to me for several thousand dollars. Eventually I had to swallow my pride and registered www.ursa-major.de.
 The story continues... |

Rue Bunte arts and events venue, Berlin
 logo design 2006
Rue Bunte quite rightly describes itself as "a green oasis in the middle of Berlin". Behind an old apartment house on a busy street is an unexpectedly large garden in which concerts and performances take place. If it rains, there's a studio with a small stage.
Started by a small band of artists and musicians in 2005, it quickly established a reputation for the quality of its atmosphere and events.

Sarasvati Productions music production
 Sarasvati Editions music publishing
east meets west internet music magazine
 logo and animation designs 1998
During the 1990s the internet was a new and exciting medium of experimentation for artists and designers. It seemed anything was possible, and the aims of many of us were not merely commercial.
Composer Jürgen Kirsch and friends, including Peter Simon, wanted to share their interest in eastern culture and philosophy - and especially the synergies betweens east and west - through art, design, writing and music. The website east-meets-west grew somewhat haphazardly out of this desire, becoming part magazine and part internet portal for Jürgen's music publishing project Sarasvati.
Sarasvati herself, the Hindu river goddess and patroness of the arts, seemed to smile on our efforts for a while. The project engendered much creative energy and dicsussion, and along the way we learned a lot about the potential as well as the limitations of internet publishing.
Personally, I was making the transition between handmade graphic design and computer work. There was (and still is) much to learn. From being a designer skilled in drawing and typography, I was now grappling with various aspects of the new technology including programming and animation. You can see one of the animations I made for this project in the animation gallery.
Eventually we all moved on, geographically and artistically. Jürgen now lives in China, where he is still very active in music composition and production, and has several internet projects online. |

Zum Durstigen Gärtner (The Thirsty Gardener), garden colony pub, Berlin
 logo and animation designs 1998
Germany has an old tradition of "Garten-Kolonien" or garden colonies, collections of small plots of land (known in Britain as allotments). Working class people, who live mostly in apartments, can rent these plots to grow their flowers, fruit and vegetables and relax with their family and friends. Each plot has some kind of building, ranging from a humble hut to quite fancy chalets.
The colonies have a particular social function, and this was especially true in East Germany during the GDR times. Zum durstigen Gärtner (The Thirsty Gardener) serves as a pub and social centre in the midst of a suburban garden colony in south-eastern Berlin.
When Frank Moch became owner of Zum durstigen Gärtner, he wanted to widen its appeal by offering new facilities and entertainment. We designed his website as part of his advertising campaign; it reflects not only the particular charm of the locale but also Frank's own taste. Cheers, Frank.
