back Edward Povey gallery

Edward Povey, born in London in 1951, lived and worked in Wales for many years. He has long been recognised as one of Wales’ foremost figurative artists. Ed came to prominence through his large murals, most notably his extraordinary ‘Hall of Illusion’ in the Powis Hall at Bangor University, North Wales.

What is perhaps less well known is his distinguished list of exhibitions abroad, especially in the USA, where he has an eager and loyal following with regular sell-out shows.

His work is represented in prestigious public collections at home and abroad, including the National Museum of Wales.

"I create paintings which explore the inner world of human psychology and philosophy: relationships and their workings, and also the interactions between the varied parts of a single mind. All this is shown impassively, in shadowy interiors where every object is symbolic: the glowing fire, the houses of cards, the alluring women and withdrawn men - at once monumental and intimate."
