Red Shift promotional CD Blutopia track 1

Written 1996

Another version of this song appeared on Hugh's solo CD Album News from Nowhere.

Tired of being in a constituency of one, I decided to create a republic.
Any further comment needed?

When I was a kid, I learned about Blutopia,
a place where all the artists & the jazzmen go.
Everybody's cool over in Blutopia,
so cool it don't even show,
only blutopians know.

Ever since they told me about Blutopia,
I've been waiting for my visa, I won't have to pay.
People with the right touch live in Blutopia.
You see them walk & talk the blutopian way.

Hey, all you aesthetes with nowhere to go but on with the show,
you don't have to be famous, it's something interior that comes with the flow.

Standing on the border of Blutopia.
Got to keep my eyes on that beautiful view.
Soon they're going to let me into Blutopia,
'cos I'm Blutopian too, now, what about you?

Hey, all you citizens, walking around
with your eyes on the ground,
all you need is an attitude,
to serve as a passport to paradise found.

Never ought to doubt it, Blutopia.
You've got to believe it, it'll come some day.
So you'd better get your hair cut for Blutopia
& learn to wear your clothes the Blutopian way.

Red Shift promotional CD Tender touch track 2

Candy came up from the sunbelt
hot enough to make the snow melt
can't imagine how we all felt
she's hardly out of school
and strung out by the pool

'cos they're out there
lenders, spenders, solid senders
mixer blenders, gender benders
trend defenders, cool pretenders
for your sweet and slender, warm and tender touch

did you see Eliza at the "theatre"?
see the way the punters treat her?
sure, everybody wants to meet her
and so the show goes on
'til there's nowhere left to run

'cos they're out there
lenders, spenders, solid senders
mixer blenders, gender benders
trend defenders, cool pretenders
for your sweet and slender, warm and tender touch

don't ask me what I think
who said that pigs don't care for pearls and mink?

the preacher talks of family values
in the tone that he and all his pals use
is his the kind of world we'd all choose
to raise our children in
without the scent of sin?

'cos they're out there
lenders, spenders, solid senders
mixer blenders, gender benders
trend defenders, cool pretenders
for your sweet and slender, warm and tender touch

Red Shift promotional CD Past the point of rescue track 3

Written by the Irish singer and composer Mick Hanly.

First recorded by Mary Black in 1988, the song was included on her album No Frontiers.
Also recorded by Hal Ketchum, it was the title track for his album Past the Point of Rescue
and a single released in 1992.

Red Shift promotional CD Everybody needs someone track 4

Another version of this song appeared on the Red Shift CD Album West of Eden.

She walks down Princes Street trying not to care
the shops like jewel boxes mocking her despair
she never knew what game he was playing
too much gets taken without saying

He leaves the toothbrush and the terry-towel robe
he leaves a letter though he doesn't have much hope
is this the price you pay for dropping your guard
who should he say he's leaving

Everybody needs someone

Ten minutes later and he's back home with the kids
his mind is screaming but he keeps it pretty hid
so much for sideline occupations
afraid she'll cause a confrontation

She walks back home and wonders how to twist the knife
will she just break alone, or will she call his wife?
she reads the letter through her gathering tears
if this is love, its frightenlng

How everybody needs someone

The tiger riders and the fools who play with sharks
the easy dealers and the three-a-penny marks
we're all just human on the inside
we wear our leather on the thin side

The tough, the humble and the terminally smart
have no protection against a bullet in the heart
she was his little backstreet business
so what's he shivering for now?

You know, everybody needs someone

Red Shift promotional CD Home to stay track 5

Got my ticket, got my invitation
packed my things and I was on my way
Inter-city, Frankfurt Central Station
wore my suit, it was a special day

inside the church, the silent rows of faithful
all keen on justice and democracy
prayed for peace, sang "ein Lied der Freude"
a voice within me whispered "wait and see"

the homeless, the homeless are the biggest city
the homeless are the biggest city
the homeless are the biggest city
let's bring them home to stay

found myself in a fancy hotel suite
found myself within a golden cage
more food than anyone could reasonably eat
outside, a world that's filling up with rage

when I quit the hotel and the smart reception
a crate of leftovers went out with me
down to the fountain, the place of dispossession
where I laid it out and said, "this stuff's for free"

the homeless, the homeless are the biggest city
the homeless are the biggest city
the homeless are the biggest city
let's bring them home to stay

do I believe in essential human worth? Yes, I do
we're made for more than marking time on earth
this is not your destiny, don't wave that cardboard sign at me

a place to go and friends to be there with
a meal and shelter and a bed at night
I felt such a fool dispensing toast and caviar
to those denied their basic human rights

the homeless, the homeless are the biggest city
the homeless are the biggest city
the homeless are the biggest city
let's bring them home, let's bring them home to stay

Red Shift promotional CD Out of this world track 6

Written 2000

Another version of this song appeared on Hugh's CD Album 9 on the sub-prime.

Let’s get this thing clearly understood
Nothing remains here to tell us how it could be
I closed the window shut the door for good
Repaired the damage, everything is as it should be
You’re out of my life, out of my place
You’re out of my zone, out of my space
You’re out of my heart, out of my head
You’re out of my car, out of my bed
You’re out of this world

There was a time not so long ago
You were the first to get close enough to know me
What’s done is done, now it’s time to go
Some time to breathe is the least of what you owe me
You’re out of my life, out of my place
You’re out of my zone, out of my space
You’re out of my heart, out of my head
You’re out of my car, out of my bed
You’re out of this world

Did you still have things to tell me?
As you stood there in the door
Or was there something left to sell me
You ought to know what you’re doing
And what you’re doing it for

I found some clothes here that smell of you
All that remains when there’s no more truth to beauty
I’d like to say, well, to hell with you
But something holds me, a latent sense of duty
You’re out of my life, out of my space
You’re out of my zone. Get out of my face!
You’re out of my heart, out of my head
You’re out of my car, out of my bed
You’re out of this world
You’re out of my bed, nobody’s girl
You’re out of my head
You’re out of this world
