On the hill on the northwest side of Chora (see gallery page 33) are the ruins of two old windmills. See the next page for more photos and information.
Beyond, to the northwest, rises the mountain range known as Mount Ambelos (Όρος Ἀμπελος) with its highest point at the summit of Karvouni (Καρβούνι), 1153 metres above sea level (see also gallery page 43).
Two mountain ranges dominate the centre of Samos, with Ambelos to the north and Mount Bournias (Μπουρνιάς), 778 metres high, to the south (see gallery page 31). Between them lies a pass, making possible travel between the east and west of the island's centre. A road which begins at Chora winds westwards up the pass via the villages of Gionedes, Koumaradei and Pyrgos, then veers northwards, skirting the west side of Ambelos, to the port of Karlovasi on the north coast. |

One of the numerous roads leading out of Chora winds up a foothill of Mount Ambelos.
It is this type of fertile landscape of rounded hills that led me to
think of Samos as "green and buxom". Unfortunately, devastating fires
have destroyed many acres of trees and vegetation in several areas. |
