Kastellorizo's Australia Square, on the waterfront near Agios Giorgos Tou Pigadiou church, was named in recognition of the close ties between the island and the "land down under". During the hard economic times after World War II many Kastellorizians emigrated to the Antipodes - the Kassies who became Aussies - but still have a keen interest in the old homeland.
