The Temenos between the Bouleuterion and the Prytaneion, Ephesus at My Favourite Planet

The "Temenos" on the north side of the Upper Agora, between the Bouleuterion and the Prytaneion.

The Upper "State" Agora

Part 7: the "Temenos"

The "Temenos" (sanctuary, also referred to as "peristyle with double monuments"), to the east of the Prytaneion, was a large open courtyard, 26.97 x 19.86 metres, surrounded on three sides by Ionic colonnades. In the centre of the courtyard stood a raised structure, 14.98 x 16.14 metres, with steps, which may have been the base for an altar or two small temples.

It is not known whether the "Temenos" was part of the Prytaneion, or to which deity or deities it was dedicated. The sanctuary was entered from the street by steps. The columns and Corinthian capitals outside the entrance are parts of the Basilica Stoa.
